Citroen SM, Peugeot 604 GTI, Renault Safrane Biturbo…. It still remembers the time when the high-end French faced the German models of the prestige weapons almost equal. However, the brands traffic have finished up, leaving the field open to our neighbours beyond the Rhine. A situation which is, since recently, in the process of change: Alpine tent back in the band with his own weapons, and the young brand DS strives to restore the reputation of French luxury.
But how to compete with German productions when the lines of French only count three-and four-cylinder? The organs germanic, far more noble, offer performance that small mechanical display can only dream of achieving. The solution, contrary to all expectations, comes from a technology that was developed by standards CO2 increasingly stringent: hybridization.
The DS7 Crossback E-Tense develops 300 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. DS
Thus, the future DS7 Crossback E-Tense combines its 4-cylinder 1.6-liter 200-horsepower with two electric motors placed on each axle. Result: 300 horsepower, combined, and 450 Nm of torque and four-wheel drive. This vitamin cure allows the DS7 Crossback to shoot down the 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, and the 1 000 m standing start in 27 seconds.
But these performances, that put France in the race, are not the only advantage of electrification. The DS7 is a plug-in hybrid, which can travel up to 58 miles (WLTP) without burning a drop of fuel, thanks to its battery of 13.2 kWh. This ability to perform journeys of several tens of kilometers in 100 % electric, allows the DS7 Crossback E-Tense demand for a consumption of 1.4 l/100 km, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 31 g/km according to the cycle WLTP.
If this solution seems attractive, however, it must be borne in mind that the battery must be recharged (1h45 on a wall outlet dedicated 32A) to qualify for the competition groups power. This can be binding. When the battery is empty, it is necessary to expect an explosion of the fuel consumption. In fact, the little heat engine will have to bear alone the weight of the vehicle plus the mass of the batteries. A heavy task for a mechanical “downsizée”.
DS announcement, however, that the battery is charging, rolling, thanks to a technology inherited from the Formula E. A system in which it will be necessary to verify the effectiveness. Other good news: despite the presence of the hybrid device, the roominess of the model is electrified is the same as that proposed by the versions strictly thermal. Also note that this variation is beyond the malus ecological, in addition to opening the door to many tax benefits for businesses. The rates for DS7 Crossback E-Tense start at 54 eur 300.
