In a month, the Armada will lay anchor at Rouen. For ten days, the docks will be in celebration of 10 hours to 2 hours in the morning. Balls, concerts, fireworks organize this great gathering of the most beautiful yachts of the planet and the warships impressive, “gray”, as we call them colloquially. From 6 to 16 June, they will be fifty, moored either side of the Seine, at the heart of the port of normandy, between the bridge and William the Conqueror, limit the portion of the river accessible to sea-going vessels, and the pont Gustave-Flaubert, the last-born, constructed in 2008 downstream of the city. With its batteries of 86 meters and air draft of 55 metres in an elevated position, this lift bridge, the highest in Europe, has been designed specifically to accommodate the Armada. That is to say, the importance of the event.
He drew in its wake many millions of visitors, all the more eager that it only takes place every four to six years. The last time was in 2013. And if this 7th edition is to desire the maximum, that is to coincide with a double anniversary: the 30 years of the event (it was created in 1989) and, Normandy forces, the 75th anniversary of the allied Landing. America will be the top of the poster, 2019. The two well-known three-masted will play the leading figures: the Eagle , 80,70 m length of hull and 2065 m2 of sail, one of the few sailing schools of the u.s. Navy. And our frigate Hermione that is no more, 65 m length and 2200 m2 of sail area, the exact replica of the one of The Fayette.
The America super star
The Hermione lands alone, like a queen, to 21 o’clock sharp, on 7 June, the day after the kick-off of the holiday. This is obviously a first, as in 2013, the frigate was still under construction at Rochefort.

But this is not all. “I also did return the statue of Liberty. Not that of New York, of course, smiled Patrick Kerr, president and founder of the Armada, but the one that had been used in the shooting of the film The Brain (1969) by Gerard Oury, with Bourvil and Belmondo.” Note that for the past fifty years, even a birthday, this charming mini-replica polyester 13.5 m in height, adorns a crossroads of Barentin, a small city in the area. During his city break rouen, the lovely lady will take up its quarters on the right bank, at the “head”, the end of the dock, just downstream from the pont Flaubert. A godsend for my instagramers. The end of the quarter of an hour american.

The collision of the ships is the major attraction of the Armada. Especially since these visits are free of charge, as access to the site and the animations. Impossible to quote here all the boats. But the dedicated web site offers a taste of this spectacular distribution. Each beautiful monster is presented as all the seams in a detailed fact sheet, with photos and measurements. Here’s a quick stopover in chapter sailboats giants with this trio Russian consisting of the three-mast Mir (109,20 m length) and four-masted sailing ship Krusenstern (114,5 m) and Sedov. The latter is the champion of the world: 118 m length of hull and 4192 m2 sail. There has never yet came to Rouen.
As is the tradition, the Armada will end in apotheosis with the Grand Parade of the Seine. On 16 June, the fleet was magnificent appareillera between 10 a.m. and 10: 30 a.m. for the descent of the river to Honfleur. Seven hours and 120 km of a parade, mind-blowing, navigation engine of course, but with, as well as the precise Patrick Kerr, “the sailors in the mature and the sails hoisted to make it pretty”. To be noted, finally, that the show will continue in the estuary of the Seine with the 25 tall ships members of the STI (Sail Training International). On 20 June, these ships, schools will align at the start of the Liberty Tall Ships Regatta 2019, heading out to Scheveningen, the port of The Hague, the netherlands, scheduled arrival on June 23. A single three-masted French will be participating: the Belem, rigged in 1896, and dean of this offshore race contested this year in tribute to D-Day, which liberated not only the Normandy but all the occupied territories of the north-west of Europe.
the right Bank, left bank
Each edition of the Armada brings its share of new land. In this 7th edition: a panoramic tower 80 m high and a barge of 150 m long, equipped with a pontoon, paddle and camping floating 14 tents in a carton (80 € the night for two with breakfast). And this is not a coincidence that all these ephemeral structures invest the left bank. In three years, its three kilometres of quays are past the state of no-man’s-land to the esplanade green: 600 trees have been planted. Crowned in 2018 by the national grand prize of the landscape, awarded every two years by the ministry of the ecological Transition and solidarity-based development projects and innovative, this realization points to the future eco-district of Rouen Flaubert, which will host 10,000 people.
Some of the buildings design were already pushed to the edge of the Seine: the 106, a concert hall, which was guarded by two old harbour cranes yellow to cubic forms, dubbed the “Picasso” ; 107, a nest of a start-up, bars and restaurants, and the 108, new administrative headquarters of the Rouen Metropolitan area. This building is a curiosity. Its architecture, two parallelepipeds in slope, evokes a large boat-style cruise ship or container ship. The coating of photovoltaic panels colorful figure, it is voluntary, an impressionist painting: the blue, yellow, purple, green, posed as touches of paint. It will be understood, Rouen, as well as other cities by the river, works to reclaim its banks, remained long in the wasteland after the downstream migration of port activity.
